Probability and Statistics

Virginia SOL 7.PS.2

Apply the data cycle with a focus on histograms to collect, organize, represent, and analyze data.

What students need to be able to do

  • Formulate questions that require data collection with a focus on histograms.
  • Determine data needed to answer a formulated question and collect data using observations, measurement, surveys, or experiments.
  • Determine how sample size and randomness ensure data is representative of a larger population.
  • Organize and represent numerical data using histograms with and without technology.
  • Investigate and explain how different intervals impact the representation of data in a histogram.
  • Compare data represented in histograms with other graphs (line plots, circle graphs, stem-and-leaf plots) and justify the best representation.
  • Analyze data in histograms to make observations and draw conclusions, identifying patterns not easily seen in raw data.
