What students need to be able to do

  • Develop the formula for the volume of right cylinders and solve contextual problems using the formula.
  • Develop the formulas for surface area of rectangular prisms and right cylinders and solve contextual problems using the formulas.
  • Determine if a contextual problem involving a rectangular prism or right cylinder represents volume or surface area.
  • Describe how the volume of a rectangular prism is affected when one measured attribute is multiplied by a factor of 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 2, 3, or 4.
  • Describe how the surface area of a rectangular prism is affected when one measured attribute is multiplied by a factor of 1/2 or 2.
