What students need to be able to do

• Compare and order fractions with like denominators by comparing numerators (e.g., 3/8 < 5/8).
• Compare and order fractions with like numerators and unlike denominators by comparing the size of the parts (e.g., 1/3 < 1/2).
• Use benchmarks (0, 1/2, 1) to compare and order fractions and mixed numbers with denominators up to 12.
• Compare fractions and mixed numbers using symbols >, <, and = (e.g., 2/3 > 1/2).
• Represent equivalent fractions with denominators up to 12, with and without models.
• Compose and decompose fractions and mixed numbers with denominators up to 12 in multiple ways, with and without models.
• Represent the division of two whole numbers as a fraction given a contextual situation and a model (e.g., 3/5 means 3 divided by 5).
