Number and Number Sense
Virginia SOL 4.NS.3
Represent, compare, and order fractions and mixed numbers with denominators up to 12, with and without models.
What students need to be able to do
- Compare and order fractions with like denominators by comparing numerators (e.g., 3/8 < 5/8).
- Compare and order fractions with like numerators and unlike denominators by comparing the size of the parts (e.g., 1/3 < 1/2).
- Use benchmarks (0, 1/2, 1) to compare and order fractions and mixed numbers with denominators up to 12.
- Compare fractions and mixed numbers using symbols >, <, and = (e.g., 2/3 > 1/2).
- Represent equivalent fractions with denominators up to 12, with and without models.
- Compose and decompose fractions and mixed numbers with denominators up to 12 in multiple ways, with and without models.
- Represent the division of two whole numbers as a fraction given a contextual situation and a model (e.g., 3/5 means 3 divided by 5).
