Computation and Estimation
Virginia SOL 4.CE.3
Estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions and single-step problems involving multiplication of a whole number and a unit fraction.
What students need to be able to do
- Estimate and determine the sum or difference of two fractions and/or mixed numbers with like denominators limited to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12, and simplify the resulting fraction.
- Estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step contextual problems using addition and subtraction with fractions and/or mixed numbers with like denominators.
- Solve single-step contextual problems involving multiplication of a whole number (12 or less) and a unit fraction with models.
- Apply the inverse property of multiplication in models (e.g., represent 4/4 or 1 as the product of 4 × 1/4).
