Estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep problems involving multiplication and single-step problems involving division with whole numbers.
What students need to be able to do
- Determine and justify whether an estimate or an exact answer is appropriate for contextual problems involving multiplication and division of whole numbers.
- Recall with automaticity the multiplication facts through 12 × 12 and the corresponding division facts.
- Create an equation using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to represent the relationship between equivalent mathematical expressions.
- Determine all factor pairs for a whole number 1 to 100 using concrete, pictorial, and numerical representations.
- Determine common factors and the greatest common factor of no more than three numbers.
- Apply strategies and algorithms, including the standard algorithm, to estimate and determine the product of two whole numbers with specified factors.
- Apply strategies and algorithms to estimate and determine the quotient of two whole numbers with a one-digit divisor and a two- or three-digit dividend, with and without remainders.
- Estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step contextual problems involving division with whole numbers.
- Interpret the quotient and remainder when solving a contextual problem.
