What students need to be able to do
- Assess the development of and changes in domestic policies due to Supreme Court decisions and acts of Congress, including Brown v. Board of Education, Federal Highway Act of 1956, AIM, Indian Self-Determination Act, Equal Pay Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, Title IX, Marriage Equality Act, Obergefell v. Hodges, Gideon v. Wainwright, Miranda v. Arizona, and Roe v. Wade leading to Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization.
- Analyze key events and conditions that have given rise to terrorism as an attack on democracy and the U.S. role in defending democracy.
- Explain social movements, including the Vietnam War and anti-war movement, Woodstock, the rise of the conservative movement and election of Ronald Reagan, Women's Movement, Gay Rights Movement, Pro-life Movement, HIV/AIDS focus, antisemitism, hate crimes, and domestic terrorism.
- Connect the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement to the election of Barack Obama.
- Explain scientific and technological changes and evaluate their impact on American culture, including media.
