What students need to be able to do

• Explain the origins and early development of the Cold War and how it changed U.S. foreign policy, including the Truman Doctrine and policy of containment.
• Explain the long-term impact of the Marshall Plan, NATO, the Warsaw Pact, and U.S. efforts to protect Western Europe.
• Describe events and leaders of the Cold War, including the Bay of Pigs, Cuban Missile Crisis, John F. Kennedy, and Nikita Khrushchev.
• Analyze the changing role of the United States in Asia, including Korea, Vietnam, and China, and the experiences of refugees from those nations.
• Explain how U.S. foreign policy pressure, economic power, defense policy, and assertion of American values led to the end of the Cold War.
