What students need to be able to do

  • Explain economic and political causes of World War II and identify major events and leaders.
  • Describe major battles including Leningrad, Midway, Normandy, Okinawa, and Stalingrad.
  • Identify the role of technology in the war including naval power, radar, computers, antibiotics, and the atomic bomb.
  • Describe key causes, events, victims, and impacts of the Holocaust including antisemitism, Nazi Party rise, Kristallnacht, ghettos, concentration camps, and liberation.
  • Examine the effects of the war including terms of peace, war crimes trials, division of Europe, plans to rebuild Germany and Japan, creation of international organizations, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
  • Describe heroic aspects including D-Day, French Resistance, Dunkirk Evacuation, covert action, and Operation Jedburgh.
