What students need to be able to do
- Explain the causes of the Cold War, the domino theory, the role of containment, and differences between U.S. and Soviet economic and political systems.
- Describe events, conflicts, and revolutionary movements including Berlin Blockade, Suez Canal Crisis, Hungarian Revolution, Bay of Pigs, Cuban Missile Crisis, and Prague Spring.
- Describe conflicts, events, and major leaders in Asia including Mao Zedong, Chiang Kai-shek, Deng Xiaoping, Ho Chi Minh, and Tiananmen Square.
- Explain the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe and the end of the Cold War including actions of Mikhail Gorbachev, Pope John Paul II, Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, and Václav Havel.
- Examine the political and economic causes and global consequences of the breakup of the Soviet Union.
- Analyze how nations around the world developed a culture of global interdependence.
