- Discriminating between long and short sounds with common spellings for the five major vowels
- Understanding open and closed syllables
- Demonstrating knowledge that every word has a vowel sound
- Identifying letter-sound correspondences for consonant digraphs
- Demonstrating knowledge of letter-sound correspondences to blend CV, CVC, VC words
- Decoding (reading) words with short vowels
- Decoding words beginning or ending in a digraph
- Encoding (spelling) words with short vowels
- Encoding words beginning or ending in a digraph
- Using letter-sound correspondences to read grade-level high frequency words
- Reading decodable and irregular words with automaticity and accuracy
