Phonological and Phonemic Awareness: The student will orally identify and produce various phonemes (individual sounds) within words to develop phonemic awareness in support of decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling).
What students need to be able to do
- Orally identifying and producing various phonemes (individual sounds) within words
- Demonstrating ability to segment spoken words in sentences
- Demonstrating ability to segment syllables in words
- Blending one syllable words by onset and rime
- Segmenting one syllable words by onset and rime
- Isolating initial sounds in three phoneme words
- Isolating medial sounds in three phoneme words
- Isolating final sounds in three phoneme words
- Demonstrating ability to segment one syllable words with two, three, and four phonemes
- Demonstrating ability to blend one syllable words with two, three, and four phonemes
- Working with words with consonant digraphs (th, sh, ch, wh)
