What students need to be able to do
- Plan and organize writing to address specific audiences and purposes using the writing process.
- Compose thesis statements that clearly communicate the writer's position or assertion.
- Organize claims, counterclaims, and evidence in a sustained and logical sequence.
- Select and contextualize evidence from sources with proper introduction and explanation.
- Embed narrative techniques and organize information logically with transitional words and phrases.
- Elaborate ideas clearly through syntactic structure, subordination, sensory details, and purposeful word choice.
