What students need to be able to do
- Compose thesis statements that clearly communicate the writer's position or assertion.
- Organize claims, counterclaims, and evidence in a sustained and logical sequence to exhibit unity.
- Effectively contextualize evidence from sources with proper introduction and thorough explanation.
- Apply varied transitions and sentence structures to connect ideas within and across paragraphs.
- Elaborate ideas clearly through purposeful and precise word choice.
