What students need to be able to do

  • Compose thesis statements that clearly communicate the writer's position or assertion.
  • Organize claims, counterclaims, and evidence in a sustained and logical sequence to exhibit unity.
  • Effectively contextualize evidence from sources with proper introduction and thorough explanation.
  • Apply varied transitions and sentence structures to connect ideas within and across paragraphs.
  • Elaborate ideas clearly through purposeful and precise word choice.
