Write in a variety of forms for diverse audiences and purposes with an emphasis on argumentative and analytical writing.
What students need to be able to do
- Write extended pieces that introduce topics clearly, provide context, and present well-defined theses.
- Adopt organizational structures that clarify relationships among ideas and concepts.
- Develop topics through sustained use of significant and relevant facts, concrete details, quotations, or other information from multiple authoritative sources.
- Provide concluding sections that follow from the information or explanation presented.
- Write analyses that develop theses demonstrating knowledgeable judgments.
- Interpret and investigate evidence from various sources and texts to draw reasonable conclusions.
- Examine and evaluate processes and/or problems to propose solutions.
- Organize claims, counterclaims, and evidence in a sustained and logical sequence.
- Write to describe personal qualifications for potential occupational or educational opportunities.
- Choose appropriate modes and blend multiple forms of writing for a range of audiences, purposes, and tasks.
