Evolutionary Mechanisms
Virginia SOL BIOII.5
Investigate how evolutionary mechanisms affect the genetic makeup of populations over time.
What students need to be able to do
- Make, support, and evaluate a claim about the effect of selective pressures on species evolution.
- Explain the effect of changing environmental conditions on the allele frequencies in a population.
- Develop and use a model to explain how evolutionary factors (gene flow, genetic drift, mutation, non-random mating, and natural selection) change allele frequencies over time.
- Develop and use a model to explain the effects of inbreeding and genetic drift in small, isolated populations.
- Make, support, and evaluate a claim about how speciation occurs.
- Make, support, and evaluate a claim about how evolution happens at the population level.
