Number and Number Sense
Virginia SOL 8.NS.1
Compare and order real numbers, including irrational numbers, using rational approximations and multiple strategies.
What students need to be able to do
- Estimate and identify the two consecutive natural numbers between which the positive square root of a given number lies (1 to 400) and justify the better approximation.
- Use rational approximations (to the nearest hundredth) of irrational numbers to compare, order, and locate values on a number line.
- Compare and order up to five real numbers (integers, fractions, decimals, mixed numbers, percents, scientific notation, radicals, π) using benchmarks, number lines, or equivalency.
- Justify solutions for comparing and ordering real numbers orally, in writing, or with a model.
