Apply the data cycle to formulate questions, collect data, organize and represent data, and analyze results using pictographs and bar graphs.
What students need to be able to do
- Formulate questions that require the collection or acquisition of data.
- Determine the data needed to answer a formulated question and collect or acquire existing data (≤ 30 data points, ≤ 8 categories).
- Organize and represent a data set using pictographs with an appropriate title, labeled axes, and key (symbols represent 1, 2, 5, or 10 data points).
- Organize and represent a data set using bar graphs with a title, labeled axes, and an appropriate scale (increments of 1, 2, 5, or 10).
- Analyze data represented in pictographs and bar graphs to describe categories and the data as a whole.
- Identify parts of the data with special characteristics (e.g., greatest, least, or same categories).
- Make inferences about data represented in pictographs and bar graphs.
- Draw conclusions and make predictions based on data characteristics.
- Solve one- and two-step addition and subtraction problems using data from pictographs and bar graphs.
