Represent, compare, and justify fractions and mixed numbers with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10.
What students need to be able to do
- Represent a given fraction or mixed number using region/area models (e.g., pie pieces, pattern blocks).
- Represent a given fraction or mixed number using length models (e.g., fraction strips, number lines).
- Represent a given fraction or mixed number using set models (e.g., counters, cubes).
- Identify a fraction represented by a model as the sum of unit fractions.
- Convert a fraction greater than one to an improper fraction and a mixed number using models (e.g., 5/4 = 1 1/4).
- Compose and decompose fractions (proper and improper) with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 using models.
- Compare a fraction (≤ 1) to the benchmarks 0, 1/2, and 1 using models and without models.
- Compare two fractions or mixed numbers with like numerators using words and symbols.
- Compare two fractions or mixed numbers with like denominators using words and symbols.
- Represent equivalent fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, or 10 using region/area and length models.
