What students need to be able to do
- Model and describe fractions as representing equal-size parts of a whole.
- Describe the relationship between the number of fractional parts needed to make a whole and the size of the parts.
- Compose the whole for a given fractional part and its value for halves, fourths, eighths, thirds, and sixths.
- Count by unit fractions up to two wholes using same-size fraction pieces from a region/area model.
- Represent, name, and write fractional parts of a whole for halves, fourths, eighths, thirds, and sixths using region/area models.
- Represent, name, and write fractional parts of a whole for halves, fourths, eighths, thirds, and sixths using length models.
- Represent, name, and write fractional parts of a whole for halves, fourths, eighths, thirds, and sixths using set models.
- Compare unit fractions for halves, fourths, eighths, thirds, and sixths using words and symbols with region/area and length models.
