Set and Number Theory
Virginia SOL DM.SNT.1
Identify and use properties of sets and set operations.
What students need to be able to do
- Compare and contrast sets, relations, and functions.
- Express relationships between sets using Venn diagrams.
- Describe a set using set-builder notation.
- Construct new sets using intersection, union, difference, and complement operations.
- Identify laws of set theory (associative, commutative, distributive, De Morgan's Law).
- Use the principle of inclusion and exclusion to determine the size of a set.
- Use properties of set operations to prove set equality.
