Set and Number Theory

Virginia SOL DM.SNT.1

Identify and use properties of sets and set operations.

What students need to be able to do

  • Compare and contrast sets, relations, and functions.
  • Express relationships between sets using Venn diagrams.
  • Describe a set using set-builder notation.
  • Construct new sets using intersection, union, difference, and complement operations.
  • Identify laws of set theory (associative, commutative, distributive, De Morgan's Law).
  • Use the principle of inclusion and exclusion to determine the size of a set.
  • Use properties of set operations to prove set equality.
