Expressions and Operations

Virginia SOL A.EO.2

Perform operations on and factor polynomial expressions in one variable.

What students need to be able to do

  • Determine sums and differences of polynomial expressions in one variable using strategies like concrete objects, pictorial models, and symbolic models.
  • Determine the product of polynomial expressions in one variable using the distributive property, area models, and concrete/pictorial/symbolic strategies.
  • Factor completely first- and second-degree polynomials in one variable with integral coefficients, including factoring out the greatest common factor (GCF).
  • Determine the quotient of polynomials using a monomial, binomial, or completely factored divisor.
  • Represent and demonstrate equality of quadratic expressions in different forms (concrete, verbal, symbolic, graphical).
