What students need to be able to do

  • Examine ratification debates and the Federalist Papers, including No. 10 and No. 51.
  • Evaluate the purposes for government stated in the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution.
  • Define the structure and authority of the national government as outlined in Articles I, II, and III of the U.S. Constitution.
  • Examine differences between powers and authority of state and national governments.
  • Connect principles of checks and balances and separation of powers to the three branches of government.
  • Describe how the Bill of Rights affirms natural rights as preceding politics.
  • Explain the amendment process for the U.S. Constitution.
