- Compose a thesis statement that clearly communicates the writer's position or assertion.
- Establish, support, and maintain a central idea with evidence throughout a piece of writing.
- Organize ideas in a logical sequence to exhibit unity.
- Use transitions, precise vocabulary, and sentence variety to create a cohesive structure.
- Show relationships between arguments, evidence, and ideas.
- Use background knowledge to expand ideas and add depth.
- Utilize reference materials when necessary.
- Identify and address counterarguments and provide a rebuttal where appropriate.
