Organize and compose multi-paragraph texts using the writing process.

What students need to be able to do

  • Generate and organize ideas using the writing process (planning, drafting, revising, editing).
  • Compose a thesis statement that focuses the topic and introduces the piece clearly.
  • Establish a central idea incorporating evidence and maintaining an organized structure.
  • Elaborate and support ideas using relevant facts, definitions, details, quotations, and/or examples.
  • Use transitions to show relationships between ideas, signal shifts, and make sentences clearer.
  • Select vocabulary and information to enhance the central idea, tone, and voice.
  • Expand and embed ideas to create sentence variety.
  • Provide a concluding statement or section.
