What students need to be able to do

  • Develop and accurately use general academic and content-specific vocabulary.
  • Use context and sentence structure to determine multiple meanings of words and clarify unfamiliar words.
  • Apply knowledge of Greek and Latin roots and affixes to predict the meaning of unfamiliar words.
  • Use relationships between words, including synonyms and antonyms, to understand word meanings.
  • Explain the construction and meaning of figurative language, including simile, hyperbole, metaphor, and personification.
  • Clarify the meaning of unknown words or select applicable definitions using word reference materials.
  • Identify word origins, derivations, and pronunciation using general and specialized word-reference materials.
  • Use newly learned words and phrases in multiple contexts, including discussions and writing activities.
