Build knowledge and comprehension skills from reading a range of challenging, content-rich texts.

What students need to be able to do

  • Read grade-level complex texts with accuracy, automaticity, appropriate rate, and meaningful expression.
  • Monitor reading to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding.
  • Proficiently read and comprehend literary and informational texts at the lower range of grade 6-8 complexity.
  • Draw evidence from grade-level complex texts to support claims, conclusions, and inferences.
  • Quote or paraphrase from texts accurately and trace where relevant evidence is located.
  • Read a series of conceptually related texts to build knowledge and vocabulary.
  • Use reading strategies to aid and monitor comprehension when encountering challenging sections of text.
