What students need to be able to do

  • Introduce a clear topic sentence and logically organize ideas and factual evidence to support the position in persuasive writing.
  • Develop, select, and organize ideas relevant to topic, purpose, and genre using precise language and descriptive language and tone-specific vocabulary to enhance the central idea, tone, and voice.
  • Use transition words and prepositional phrases for sentence variety and to link one sentence and paragraph to another.
  • Provide a concluding statement or section.
