What students need to be able to do
- Develop general academic and content-specific vocabulary through listening, reading, and discussion.
- Discuss meanings of complex words and phrases acquired through conversations and literature.
- Determine word meanings using frequently occurring root words and inflectional affixes.
- Use sentence context to apply knowledge of homophones.
- Apply knowledge of morphology, synonyms, and antonyms to determine word meanings.
- Distinguish shades of meaning among verbs and adjectives.
- Use strategies to infer word meanings.
- Use glossaries, dictionaries, and thesauruses to determine or clarify word meanings.
- Use newly learned words and phrases in discussions and speaking activities.
