What students need to be able to do

  • Develop general academic and content-specific vocabulary through listening, reading, and discussion.
  • Discuss meanings of complex words and phrases acquired through conversations and literature.
  • Determine word meanings using frequently occurring root words and inflectional affixes.
  • Use sentence context to apply knowledge of homophones.
  • Apply knowledge of morphology, synonyms, and antonyms to determine word meanings.
  • Distinguish shades of meaning among verbs and adjectives.
  • Use strategies to infer word meanings.
  • Use glossaries, dictionaries, and thesauruses to determine or clarify word meanings.
  • Use newly learned words and phrases in discussions and speaking activities.
