Organize and compose writing for specific audiences and purposes.

What students need to be able to do

  • Plan and organize writing using the writing process (planning, drafting, revising, editing).
  • Compose thesis statements that clearly communicate the writer's position or assertion.
  • Introduce and develop central ideas, organizing them in a logical sequence to exhibit unity.
  • Defend positions using sufficient reasons with evidence from credible sources.
  • Embed narrative techniques to develop and enhance writing.
  • Use transitions effectively to connect ideas within and across paragraphs.
  • Elaborate ideas clearly through intentional word choice and varied sentence structure.
