Use conventions of Standard English mechanics in speaking and writing.
What students need to be able to do
- Capitalize the first word in a sentence, proper nouns, and the pronoun I.
- Identify statements and questions and use correct ending punctuation (e.g., period, question mark, and exclamation point).
- Use conventional spelling of words with commonly taught spelling patterns and for frequently occurring irregular words.
