What students need to be able to do

  • Use phoneme-grapheme (sound/symbol) correspondence to encode single-syllable words containing closed syllables (CVC, CCVC, CVCC, CCVCC), open syllables (CV, CCV), and vowel-consonant-e (CVCE, CCVCE).
  • Encode two-syllable words by breaking them into syllables (e.g., pancake).
  • Encode unfamiliar words by recognizing and applying taught word patterns.
  • Encode grade-level high-frequency words with automaticity and accuracy.
