What students need to be able to do

  • Decode and encode words with short vowels, including blends with digraphs and closed syllables (CVC, CCVC, CVCC, CCVCC).
  • Decode and encode words with long vowels, open syllables (CV, CCV), and vowel-consonant-e (CVCE, CCVCE).
  • Decode words containing common vowel teams and r-controlled vowels.
  • Decode multisyllabic words by breaking them into syllables.
  • Read grade-level high-frequency words with automaticity and accuracy.
  • Write grade-level high-frequency words with automaticity and accuracy.
