What students need to be able to do

  • Participate in collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) on grade one topics and texts.
  • Listen actively and follow agreed-upon rules for participating in discussions (e.g., waiting for a turn to speak without unnecessary interruptions and staying on topic).
  • Respectfully build on others' ideas and express own ideas clearly.
  • Ask questions to seek help, get information, or clarify information for further understanding.
  • Express ideas and needs in complete sentences.
